Steve and SwampAngel were spot on. My original mistaken identity - pygmy rattler - has been sniffed out and corrected. It's a baby cottonmouth, AKA water moccasin.

He was in a dangerous place, in the middle of a forest road, so I grabbed a LONG stick and tried to gently encourage him to move. He was having none of it, so I just had to hope he would change his mind before a truck came along. There was no sign of him on the way back, so I reckon he finally got the right idea.

I think....that may actually be a baby water moccasin. Pygmies tend to have spots or blotches instead of bars like the snake in your pictures. Of course, there are always anomalies. Excellent pictures by the way.

Valown... By cracky, I reckon you're right. Remind me not to post in a hurry when I'n half asleep. And to always recheck my labels. I'm pretty sure I originally miscast the little guy because he didn't do the mouth display. I'm sure I've seen pics of baby cottonmouths doing that. Seems like he was in an odd place for a water-lover, as well. Thanks ever so for reminding me I need to slow down. 8-]

Eventhough they can be the ornriest snakes around, they sure are cute when they're little. The markings are beautiful! Nice pictures.

That is a beautiful snake. You live in a wonderful place with so many kinds of wildlife around you.

SwampAngel, he really was a beauty. I'm still kicking myownself for not paying closer attention to the markings. This week has been so busy, I don't know whether I'm coming or going. I'm determined to slow down this weekend.

Steve, you have a great eye! So sorry about the delay in giving credit. On the plus side, I'm usually pretty good about learning from my mistakes. 8-}
