St. Marks, fortsatt

I didn't want to overload my fellow dial-uppers with pics last time, so I held back a few for later. It's later. 8-]

Top to bottom: another pair of Black-necked Stilts, Purple Gallinule; Tricoloured Heron; Lesser Yellowlegs; Cotton Rat

DS and I drove over to Live Oak today to check out the cemetery where my g-g-grandparents are buried. Tomorrow, we're going to run down to Mandalay to look for butterflies. There are almost always lots of Queens down there. Since something killed my butterfly bush, we don't get as many here. If we have time, we'll probably drive down Cow Creek Grade, as well. Cow Creek runs down to the Hickory Mound Unit of the Big bend WMA. I'm still hoping for a bear sighting. I've about given up on seeing an actual living, breathing Florida beaver.

OK, it's late and my brain is fast moving into stream-of-conscious mode. Reckon I'd better nip it in the bud and save y'all further ramblings of a sleep-deprived cracker. 8-}

Sleep sweet!

I got out to St. Marks today and I think I saw the green heron nest. None of my pictures came out very well (different lens than usual, just wasn't up to it, I guess) so they aren't posted anywhere. I think I saw a couple of those little rats by the lighthouse! I was amazed by how dried up all the ponds are (makes sense, with the drought).

Peggy, I went out there this evening and saw one of the babies and one adult. But I didn't even try to take pics, as my camera doesn't do at all well in low light. Even though I've been 3 times this week, I am still amazed at how little water is in the ponds. Hoping for rain, but not till the stilts hatch.

Really nice shots Sophie.

Thanks, FC! That zoom lens is a wonder. I googled pics to be sure - well, relatively sure - about the rat. The rice rats have more of that long rodent nose thing going on. And smoother hair. As far as I could tell. As long as they stay out of my house, I'm happy to live and let live. 8-}
