That was one big bird!

The other evening, as I was furiously shooting at the Avocet and Willets, I heard an odd noise. Not wanting to lose a minute of the waning light, I ignored it. For a while. But it kept getting louder and louder. I looked up and down the road, but saw nothing, so turned my attention back to the birds. It continued to get louder. I knew it was getting closer, but I still couldn't see anything. After a few minutes, the birds started getting restless. I looked up just in time to see this strange creature flying very low over the marsh.

No, it was bigger than these guys.

No, no.. still bigger.

It was heading right toward me and I was afraid it would scare off my models. By the time I swung the camera around, it had passed me by and was heading toward the boat ramp.

I turned back expecting to find all the birds gone, but they had just moved around a bit and were now in an even better postition for pics. Ten minutes later, I heard the ultralight coming back. This time, it circled a couple times, then followed the road back up toward the highway. For a minute there, I thought it was going to land in the road, but it lifted back up and disappeared into the sunset. Kinda.

Most of the pics were taken through the windshield. This one would have been my favourite if it had turned out better. Since it was a bit out of focus, I figgered it was a perfect candidate for the time machine.

It's turned right warm again, but I'm going to try to keep getting out there as often as possible. You just never know what you'll find!

Great post! You had me there, I absolutely wasn't expecting an ultralight.

those "big birds" must be popular all up and down the gulf coast... we see them all the time down here. your other birds must be used them too... glad they didn't scare off.

RCWB, I certainly wasn't expecting an ultralight, either! It was pretty cool, but for the noise. We fairly often see some interesting aircraft from the tiny county airport - with its one grass runway - nearby. This was definitely the most interesting so far.

Meems, this is the first one I've seen in a really long time. I did wonder what the birds thought of all the racket. I had just about sneaked up on a bunch of storks yesterday when a school bus came along and scared off every last one. >8\ Wimps. ;}
