The bird Formerly Known as Louisiana Heron
Y'all were definitely on the right track. This handsome guy let me closer than any other Tricolored Heron ever has. Maybe 50 feet. (I'm awful at guesstimating distance, so that may not be anywhere near correct.) I zig-zag slowly in the bird's general direction, pausing frequently to pretend I'm looking for food on the ground, just as he does. It works surprisingly well, depending on the bird's general disposition.

FC, I haven't mastered the crouch-creep yet. Reckon I oughta hit the gym for a few weeks before trying that one in the field. 8-}
