There were two, foraging in the shallows of the lake at Largo Central Park Nature Preserve. Neither was much interested in being photographed. They stayed half-hidden in the branchy tangle of a tree limb dangling in the water.

Grrrr!!! That Steve is too good at this!
I learned something in this exercise, Sophie. Previously, I didn't know there was a red band above the knee on moorhens. In fact, when your first two clues were posted, I thought the red was a refracted bit of light giving an untrue image. You're pretty sneaky, aren't you? I didn't take the red seriously and was almost settled on Gadwall as the most likely -- but not perfect -- answer. But then I checked the book one more time for other yellow-legged swimmers, and what do you know...Common Moorhens have red on their thighs! I realized that I had been seeing your photo wrongly, that the red was an important part, not an aberration of light.
So I kind-of bumbled into it. But it made swampangel growl at me, so it was worth it! Good puzzle.
I thought the red was an abberation, too (hehe, I used a big word today!). I must learn not to assume anything!
Later tonight I'm going to post about some old bottles I found at work. If you know anything about the type of stuff, please check it out!
I feel like an old coot ;) for not getting this one.
Now I need to head to swampangel cause I KNOW old bottles.
Good puzzle Sophie!
Swampangel, I'll definitely be checking out your bottles. Not that I know so much about them, but I do collect a few certain types.
