Goin' home

I've been waiting for school to start so I can have a nice peaceful day at our tiny beach. It's even tinier since Dennis came through. (And it was closed for at least a year.) More than 3-4 cars and the place is like a sardine tin. As we approached, I was thrilled to see not a single car in the parking area. It's a rare treat to have the place all to ourownselves.

When we got closer, we discovered the reason for the lack of competition for sandular space. *sigh*

DS is going to keep me company the next few days on a whirlwind trip to Tarpon Springs. I'm keeping an eye on the state's beach water sampling reports. So far, so good. We're planning on a sunrise run to Fred Howard Park and I'll be really miffed if I can't at least go wading there.

Then we'll be zipping over to Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. They have white tiger cubs and African penguins! Public viewing of the cubs is limited to 9.30-noon, so there'll be no dilly-dallying on the way. It's been quite a while since my last visit. I'm hoping their free-flight aviaries are still as awesome as I remember. If we have enough time and energy after all that excitement, we'll spend the rest of the day at Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo. It's right next door to Heritage Village, a living history museum. I wish we could fit the Florida Aquarium into our schedule, but there's only so much fun one can squeeze into 2 days. Besides, from what I've read, it seems to have become way too touristy/gimmicky.

I'll really miss having supper at my (former) favourite little Cuban restaurant in Tampa Bay Centre. They demolished the mall a couple of years ago to make room for a new Bucs training centre. >8\

The rest of our tentative itinerary includes the sponge docks, Spring Bayou, Wall Springs, Dunedin Causeway, 'Heron Island', Green Key, Anclote parks... we need 2 more days.

We'll be leaving bright and early tomorrow (Tuesday). Y'all be good. See ya Friday.

Have a great time away.

Tarpon Springs was the first place I ever saw a Magnificent Frigatebird, back in 1986.

What a nice site. I to am a Florida Native, but not as many generations as yours. My mother was born on the Seminole Rez in South Florida but her mom from the Indian Rez in Alabama. What made me stop on your blog was I saw the word Wall Springs. I just discovered it about a month ago. I am a Bird Photographer and all I can say is wow what a place. I try to go at least once every two weeks. I will continue reading your stories as it looks real interesting here!
