Well, dawgawn if KellyRae didn't correctly guess dragonfly.

It's a male Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis). I'm always thrilled to see these guys - and all their cousins - patroling our yard. Anything that eats mosquitoes is OK in my book. We're seeing more Carolina Saddlebags this year, as well, but they're less inclined to sit still for a portrait. I confess I'm a bit partial to the Eastern Pondhawks, coz they're most likely to sit on my toes. 8-]

FC got it again. I was so tickled to find in our yard not only this lovely little female Eastern Amberwing, but her handsome consort, as well.

Halloween Pennant (Celithemis eponina)

We see a lot of these, along with the Four-spotted Pennants, at the refuge. This one was at the Bottoms Road end of the Panacea Unit. It was a windy day and he made sure I got no closer than about 20-30 feet. Our yard dragons are often much bolder, sometimes allowing me to get right up in their little faces. The Pondhawks, occasionally, even perch on my toes.

I wasn't terribly happy with (the quality of) these pics, but found them amusing enough to share. This Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor) did an amazing Reddish Egret impression.
